15/1055. Private/ Lieutenant William Arthur Armitage



Born.1897
 

William Arthur Armitage was the only son of Arthur (a Blacksmith) and Annie Armitage (nee Brown) living at The Cottage, Kidston Hall, Beeston with his parents and two sisters, Emma Born 1897 and Agnes born 1901. He joined the Pals on the 4/9/1914 and served with 11 section, 15 Platoon D Company under LT.J.G.Vause at Colsterdale, Egypt and France, He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant  on the 28/2/1917 into the 3rd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment.

At the outbreak of the 2nd  world war he joined the ARP and later the Leeds Home Guard, as an experienced WW1 2nd  Lieutenant he was given the Home Guard Rank of Captain and served with them until the war ended. He was awarded the 1939/45 defence medal for his service in the Home Guard.
