Major/Lt Colonel W.D.Coles

W.D Coles was commissioned, as a Lieutenant, into the 7^th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge Regiment, on the 2^nd March 1915, and less than three months later, on the 23^rd may 1915, he was again promoted, this time to Captain.

On the 23^rd June 1915, captain Coles was transferred to the 9^th Battalion duke of Cambridge Regiment, and on the 1^st  June 1916 was promoted to major.

Major W.D Coles joined the Leeds Pals on the 5^th  April 1918, from the 4^th Entrenching Battalion as second in command to Lt Colonel C.W.Tilly.

on the 14^th April 1918 C.W.Tilly was killed in action, and major W.D.Coles assumed command of the "Pals" He was temporary commissioned as Lt Colonel

Lt Colonel Coles, after commanding the "Pals" for only two weeks, was severely wounded, and invalid home.
