W.D Coles was commissioned, as a Lieutenant, into the 7th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge Regiment, on the 2nd March 1915, and less than three months later, on the 23rd may 1915, he was again promoted, this time to Captain. On the 23rd June 1915, captain Coles was transferred to the 9th Battalion duke of Cambridge Regiment, and on the 1st June 1916 was promoted to major. Major W.D Coles joined the Leeds Pals on the 5th April 1918, from the 4th Entrenching Battalion as second in command to Lt Colonel C.W.Tilly. on the 14th April 1918 C.W.Tilly was killed in action, and major W.D.Coles assumed command of the "Pals" He was temporary commissioned as Lt Colonel Lt Colonel Coles, after commanding the "Pals" for only two weeks, was severely wounded, and invalid home.
