15/302 Sgt/Pioneer G.F. Easy


Born 1878 at 7 Chestnut Grove, Bolton Woods, Bradford. 

 K.I.A.-1st July 1916 at Serre, France

George Fison Easy was the son of Eliza and George Easy a stonemason, who was working at Bolton Woods Quarry, Bradford when George was born.

George was the 7th of 9 children, who were all born in Bradford. His siblings were Sarah Anne, Emma, James William, Richard, Tom, Lily R, John and Annie F.

In 1895 at the age of 17 George enlisted, as a Pte, into the 2nd Volunteer battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment and 4 years later was promoted to Sgt. He saw active service in the South African Campaign, during which he spent 16 weeks in hospital with enteric fever.

At the outbreak of the 1st World War he was employed by the Leeds City tramways, and Living 18 Otter Street, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, with his wife Annie Elizabeth and 2 daughters.

In September 1914, at the age of 35, George enlisted into the “Leeds Pals” as a Private but obviously because of his previous service immediately promoted to Sgt, and posted to “D” Company in charge of the pioneers.

Sgt George Fison Easy was killed in action on the 1st July 1916.

His body was never found, and is commemorated on the Thiepville Memorial.
