Born Farsley, Leeds

Herbert Edgar Hare, a married man was living at Hawthorne Cottage Farsley when he enlisted with the “Pals” on the 4/9/1914. Soon promoted to sergeant he served with D company,15 platoon as a platoon bomber at Colsterdale Egypt and France. When the “Pals” attacked Serre on 1/7/1916, he was one of a handful of men captured and made prisoner of war.

On the 2/7/1916, his daughter Doris (Peggy) was born. This he found out many months later via the British red cross, in 1918 whilst still a P O W.
He received news of the death of his wife during the flu epidemic. He was repatriated in 1919 and discharged from army service on 7/3/1919.

 

During the 2nd World War he served with the Pudsey Home Guard.
