15/503.Corporal A.Jackson

Born 1891, St Clements, Leeds.
Died of wounds, Leeds 20/7/1916 age 25.

Arthur Jackson was the son of John William and Mary Ann Jackson of Farnley, Leeds.
He was working at the Yorkshire Penny Bank, Woodsley Road branch when he joined the Pals on September 9^th 1914.
Hhe served with the Pals in Colsterdale, Egypt and France.

Initially given the position of Lance Corporal with B Company, he was soon promoted to full Corporal.

He served alongside other Farnley men John Hill, John Doughty, Wilfred Sewell and William McNeil who had joined the Pals around this time.

Whilst the battalion was at Ripon it took part in the Northern Command Cross Country Championship at Gosforth Park, (which it won). It was reported in the Armley and Wortley news that Arthur came in 85^th out of 1,384 runners.

On the 1^st of July 1916 when the Pals attacked Serre, Corporal Jackson was severely wounded and evacuated to Beckets Park Hospital Leeds.
He died of his wounds almost three weeks later and was buried in Leeds General Cemetery.
Unfortunately this cemetery could not be maintained and therefore he is commemorated at Lawnswood Cemetery, Leeds.

He is also commemorated on the Farnley War Memorial Leeds.
