Reginald
Earl Laxton was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs George Wright Laxton,
Woollen manufacturer and president of the Dewsbury junior Conservative
association. “Rex”
was educated at Bridlington Grammar School, and Dresden, and before war
broke out was engaged in the wool business with Mr WC Gaunt of Bradford. In
September 1914, along with his brother, Charles
Fraser Laxton, made the short journey to the Leeds town hall,
and enlisted into the Leeds Pals. Rex
was given the rank of L/Cpl and posted to B Company, whose commanding
officer was Major LP Baker. On
the 12th May 1915, Reginald represented his company in 2
events at the regimental sports day. L/Cpl
RE Laxton only served with the pals at Colsterdale, because on the 26th
June 1915, he, along with his brother Charles
Fraser Laxton, secured commissions and were both posted as
2/Lieutenants into the 16th Battalion, The West Yorkshire
Regiment, 1st Bradford Pals. Although
not serving with them anymore he still spent time with them, as both the
15th and 16th battalions formed part of the 31st
division. On
the 10th June 1916, whilst attached to the 93rd
Trench Mortar Battery, 2/Lt RE Laxton was killed in action. |
