Walter
Metcalfe was the only son of Mr and Mrs Richard Metcalfe of Park Dene,
Morley in Leeds. He was educated at Leeds Modern School until 1906 then
transferred to Morley Grammar School. He left Grammar School in 1908 to
become a boarder at Bridlington College. Walter was also a choirboy at St Andrews in Bruntcliffe, Morley. On leaving college he entered into his Father’s business as a jam and cake manufacturer. He and his childhood friends Fred Sutcliffe, Norman Firth and Lawrence Stott enlisted in the Leeds Pals on the 6th September 1914. They were all posted to Section 3, no1 Platoon, of A Company. Their platoon commanding Officer being Lieutenant Evelyn Lintott. Whilst at Colsterdale he trained as a sniper and also become a platoon bomber. He served with the "Pals" at Colsterdale , Egypt and France.During the Battle of the Somme he was badly wounded in the right leg by shell fire. He was transferred to the Whalley Military Hospital in Lancashire where he had two necessary operations. The first one was to amputate his right leg at the knee and the second one on Sunday 9th July to remove gangrene. The second operation sadly proved fatal. He was buried in his own town of Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire on the afternoon of, Thursday 13th July 1916. |
