G.P.Norton
an accountant from Huddersfield, was commissioned on the 22nd
April 1907 as a Captain into the 5th Territorial Battalion of
The Duke of Wellingtons (West Riding) Regiment. On
the 14th October 1914 two months after the outbreak of war
Captain Norton was again promoted, this time to Major into the same
battalion. Major
Norton went to France, with 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellingtons,
West Riding Regiment, part of the on the 49th Division on 15th
April 1915. On
the 1st June 1916 18 months after leaving for France, Major
Norton was again commissioned, this time as Lt/Colonel taking over command
of the 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellingtons, West Riding
Regiment. In
April 1918 Lt/Colonel W.D. Coles of the “Leeds Pals” was wounded, and
Lt Colonel G.P.Norton had the honour of becoming the final Commanding
Officer of the 15th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. (The
Leeds Pals) On
the 20th December 1918, at the 31st Division Mounted
Sports held at Longuenesse Aerodrome. Lt Colonel rode for the pals, his
own horse “Daisy” in the “Lys Sweepstake”. |
