Roy
Balfour Hodgson Raynor was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Leeds
University where he studied textiles and also became a member of the
University Officer Training Corps. Living with his parents at "Oakroyd",
Horsforth, Leeds, when war was declared, he enlisted with the
"Pals" early September 1914, and by the 25th of that
month, due to his academic background and service in the OTC, was offered
and accepted a commission as Temporary Lieutenant He served with the
"Pals" as B company, No 7 platoon Commanding Officer, alongside
university friends and OTC members in Colsterdale, Egypt and France until
his death in 1916. Battalion War Diary 22nd May 1916. On the night of Monday 22nd May 1916, men from Nos 7 & 8 Platoons went out with a covering party and these were attacked by a German Patrol, whose members threw bombs……. At about 10:30pm, shortly after the fight in no mans land, the German artillery opened up again and shrapnel rained down on the men who were trying to rescue the wounded members of the wiring party. In this action, Roy was severely wounded by shrapnel. He was taken to a casualty clearing station near Gezaincourt but died two days later. He is buried in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Amongst the many casualties in the above action were: 15/795.Pte.J.N.Sen.
