Fred
Sutcliffe, was the only son of Joshua and Louie Sutcliffe, of 203 Fountain
Street, Morley, Leeds and was one of four scholars of Cross Hall Council
School who won County Minor Scholarships in 1906. For the next three years
he attended the Morley Grammar School and on leaving, entered the office
of William Smith and co. Ltd, Bruntcliffe, Morley.
He and his childhood friends, Walter Metcalfe, Norman Firth, and Lawrence Stott ( he was to be given a commission in 1915) enlisted into the Leeds Pals on the 6th September 1914. They were all posted to Section 3, No.1 Platoon of A Company. Their platoon commanding officer being Lieutenant Evelyn Lintott. Fred was to become a platoon bomber, along with Walter Metcalfe.He served alongside his "Pals" in Colsterdale, Egypt and France. When the "Pals" attacked Serre (Battle Of The Somme) on the 1st of July 1916 he, like so many other pals was killed in action. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, |
